Welcome to Low Income Rich Life! I’m Kevin Bass, and I’m excited to share this journey with you.
If you’re like me—navigating the challenges of preparing for retirement on a limited income—you’ve come to the right place. I created Low Income Rich Life to help people just like us find practical, achievable ways to secure a fulfilling retirement, even if the financial odds haven’t always been in our favor.
My own story is one of trial and error, learning the hard way about the importance of financial stability and the steps necessary to achieve it. I’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way, but I’ve also discovered that it’s never too late to start planning for a brighter future.
This blog, along with my podcast, is here to offer guidance, share my experiences, and hopefully inspire you to take control of your financial life.
1. Retirement Savings:
Saving for retirement is the cornerstone of any solid retirement plan. If you’re anything like me, you might be starting later than you’d like, but the good news is that it’s never too late to begin. Whether you’re looking at a 401k, Roth IRA, or an HSA, the key is to start now.
Personally, I prefer to begin with my employer’s 401k plan, taking full advantage of any matching contributions. Once that’s maxed out, I focus on my Roth IRA and, finally, my health savings account (HSA). Each of these accounts has its own benefits, and I’ll be diving deeper into each in future posts, so stay tuned for more detailed guidance.
2. Getting Out of Debt:
Debt is one of the biggest obstacles to a secure retirement. We live in a culture where debt is often seen as normal—something to manage rather than eliminate. But if you want to retire comfortably on a low income, getting out of debt is crucial.
Like many, I’ve struggled with debt and the mindset that comes with it. But I’m here to tell you that it’s possible to break free. By creating a solid plan, listing out all your debts, and tackling them one by one, you can redirect those funds into something far more beneficial: your retirement savings. Imagine the peace of mind that comes with being debt-free as you enter retirement.
3. Housing:
Housing is often the single largest expense in most households, and it’s the key to making your retirement plans feasible. Whether it’s paying off your mortgage early, downsizing, or considering alternative housing options like tiny homes or mobile homes, reducing your housing costs is essential.
My wife and I built our own modest home on a small piece of land, and while it wasn’t easy, it’s allowed us to live mortgage-free. This small, paid-off home in the country is our little slice of peace and security. I’ll be sharing more about how you can lower your housing costs and explore alternative housing options in future posts.
4. Lowering Expenses:
Beyond housing, lowering your overall expenses is another critical step in preparing for retirement. From reducing utility bills to growing your own food, there are countless ways to cut costs.
As an avid gardener, I’ve found that growing my own vegetables not only reduces our grocery bill but also provides fresh, healthy food year-round. I’ve also invested in energy-efficient solutions like solar-powered mini-split heat pumps, which have significantly lowered our utility bills. In upcoming posts, I’ll cover these and many other strategies to help you save money and live more sustainably.
5. Living on Less:
Finally, learning to live on less is perhaps the most important lesson of all. True happiness doesn’t come from how much money you have, but from how you spend your time and what brings you joy.
Whether it’s finding low-cost entertainment, traveling on a budget, or shopping at garage sales and thrift stores, living simply can lead to a more fulfilling life. And the best part? It prepares you for a retirement where you can thrive on a limited income. I’ll be sharing tips and stories on how to embrace this lifestyle, both for today and for your golden years.
